70-year-old woman in Uganda give birth to twins, thanks to IVF treatment
In Uganda, a 70-year-old woman named Safina Namukwaya has recently become one of the world’s oldest new mothers, giving birth to twins through fertility treatment. The historic delivery took place at a hospital in the capital, Kampala, where Namukwaya had been undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment. The cesarean section delivery resulted in the arrival of a baby boy and a baby girl.
Arthur Matsiko, the spokesperson for the Women’s Hospital International Facility Center, reported on Friday that Namukwaya is in good health, engaging in conversation, and even walking around the hospital as instructed. Notably, this isn’t her first experience with IVF success, as she had previously welcomed a daughter at the same facility in 2020 through a similar procedure.
Namukwaya’s delivery at this hospital sets a record as she becomes the oldest woman to give birth at the facility, which is renowned for its specialization in assisting couples facing challenges in conceiving. The hospital’s proprietor, a prominent gynecologist in the East African region, has been instrumental in supporting individuals and couples on their journey to parenthood.
Advancements in IVF research contribute to increased success rates, with notable instances reported worldwide. For instance, in 2019, media outlets covered the story of a 73-year-old woman in southern India who successfully delivered twin girls after receiving IVF care.
